Step out of Blanche station and the first thing you see is the red sails of the Moulin Rouge. The square is lively at almost any hour, with visitors taking photos, buses pulling in and café terraces spilling onto the pavement. Rue de Bruxelles begins right here, on the opposite side of the boulevard from the cabaret, and it leads you straight to us.

Six minutes later you are at number 42, at the Place de Clichy end of the street. Upstairs, the atmosphere changes completely: a cherry-blossom tree lit in violet, soft music, the scent of warm oil. It is the perfect decompression after the crowds of the boulevard.

A short walk down rue de Bruxelles

Rue de Bruxelles is one of those quiet Parisian streets that most visitors never notice. It runs from Place Blanche to rue d’Amsterdam, lined with stone buildings and wrought-iron balconies, and crosses the small Place Adolphe-Max halfway along. The salon sits near the far end, discreet, just before the bustle of Place de Clichy.

The name Blanche, white, is often said to come from the carts of white gypsum that once came down from the Montmartre quarries and dusted the road. Whatever the true story, the square has been a crossroads of Paris nightlife for well over a century.

Place Blanche is where rue Lepic begins its long, winding climb up the hill. The lower part feels like a village market street, with cheese shops, bakeries and greengrocers. A few steps up, the Café des Deux Moulins still draws fans of the film Amélie. Further on, the street passes the last windmills of Montmartre before reaching the quieter lanes near the top.
