Abbesses is the Montmartre that Parisians love: a small, sloping square with plane trees, café tables in the sun, a covered Guimard metro entrance and the red-brick church of Saint-Jean de Montmartre, one of the first built in reinforced concrete. From the square, you simply let gravity guide you: down rue des Abbesses, then along the lower part of rue Lepic with its food stalls and the famous café from the film Amélie, until you reach Place Blanche and the Moulin Rouge. From there, rue de Bruxelles takes you flat and straight to number 42.

Around 12 minutes, no stairs to climb, and a nice way to let the city slip away before you arrive. On the return, if you would rather not climb back up, Blanche and Place de Clichy stations are close by on line 2.

After a day on the hill

Montmartre is a place you explore on foot, and your legs will feel it. Cobbled lanes, steps everywhere, the climb to the basilica: by late afternoon, calves and lower back ask for attention.
